Unlocking Tennis: A Rising Senior's Mission
Imagine a young athlete, passionate about tennis, whose journey is abruptly halted by an injury. Sayan Goodrich, a Montclair High School rising senior, found herself in this very situation. The Birth of Baseline Buddies
It all started with a simple drive past Nishuane Elementary School. Goodrich, reflecting on her own tennis journey, wondered about the potential for tennis programs at the elementary level. This curiosity led to a conversation with Eric Eder, the physical education teacher at Nishuane, who encouraged her to pursue the idea. And so, Baseline Buddies was born.
A Growing Community
In its inaugural year, Baseline Buddies welcomed six eager young learners. The program's impact was immediate, and word spread quickly. By the following spring, the number of participants had doubled, and Goodrich anticipates even more interest in 2027. The demand for the program highlights a growing community of tennis enthusiasts in Montclair.
Overcoming Challenges
However, the journey hasn't been without its challenges. With the Montclair High School boys' tennis team also in need of court space, Goodrich had to adapt. For part of the season, Baseline Buddies moved indoors to the Nishuane School gym. But Goodrich's determination and the support of coaches, mentors, and the community kept the program thriving.
A Vision for the Future
Goodrich's vision extends beyond the courts of Nishuane. She sees Baseline Buddies as a catalyst for expanding opportunities for younger students across the district. Her presentation to the Montclair Board of Education highlighted the program's impact and growth, and she believes student-led initiatives like this can make a real difference.
Repairing the Mountainside Courts
One of the key challenges Goodrich aims to address is the disrepair of the Mountainside Tennis Courts on Upper Montclair Avenue. She's working with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to secure a grant that could fund the repair of these courts. This would not only benefit the high school tennis team but also allow Baseline Buddies to return to the courts for the entire season.
