The generation that was supposed to benefit from this technological revolution is now being labeled as less cognitively capable than their parents. This is a stark contrast to the vision of Governor Angus King, who initiated Maine's statewide laptop program in 2002, aiming to provide children with unprecedented access to information. However, the reality is far from ideal. Psychologist Jean Twenge argues that the ease and addictive nature of technology, particularly social media and gaming apps, have led to a decline in learning capabilities. The introduction of the iPhone in 2007 further exacerbated the situation, as students' screen time increased, and their test scores dipped. This trend is not unique to Maine; across the country, classroom technology usage has skyrocketed, with teachers spending one to four hours per day with educational tech. But the problem goes deeper than just screen time. Students are often distracted by off-task activities, and the constant interruptions make it difficult to focus and learn effectively. This is a critical issue, as learning is meant to be an effortful and challenging process, not an easy and effortless one. The solution, according to neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath, lies in aligning educational tools with how human learning actually works. Congress could impose efficacy standards to fund research on effective digital tools, and schools could take matters into their own hands by limiting cellphone use during instructional time. However, the real issue is a policy one, and the generation of Americans educated with gadgets is the victim of a failed pedagogical experiment.
